Motor Underwriter
Twickenham | £35,000–£55,000 depending on experience | Primarily office-based

Want to put your specialist motor knowledge to work in a growing business where you can take ownership, make decisions and build your career?

CKB Recruitment is working with an ambitious insurance business in Twickenham to recruit a Motor Underwriter with experience of bespoke and niche personal lines motor insurance.

Having doubled its sales team from 25 to 50, the business is targeting a doubling of gross written premium by April 2027. It’s an exciting time to join, with that growth creating opportunities for people who are keen to contribute and take on greater responsibility.

You’ll work closely with the underwriting team and Director, becoming a trusted technical contact for the sales floor and helping ensure that growth is supported by sound underwriting decisions.

The team and culture

Expect a lively office with real energy: people work hard, enjoy what they do and stay focused on delivering results.

You’ll suit this environment if you’re proactive, positive and keen to learn. You’ll be comfortable taking guidance, sharing knowledge and working as part of a team, while developing the confidence to take ownership of your responsibilities.

The business supports its people through training, employee recognition and team socials. Internal progression is backed by examples: colleagues have moved from sales and customer service into underwriting, team leadership and management. The Director overseeing the business also progressed from Head of Underwriting.

What you’ll be doing

This role combines hands-on underwriting referrals, insurer relationships and scheme performance monitoring. You will:

  • Act as a key point of contact for underwriting queries from the sales team.

  • Assess email and internal referrals, making competent decisions within your authority and referring to insurers where necessary.

  • Present bespoke motor risks to insurer underwriters and agree terms.

  • Build and maintain productive relationships with insurer partners.

  • Monitor insurer loss ratios and underwriting performance, helping identify trends and areas requiring attention.

  • Assist with producing scheme performance data using company systems.

  • Maintain accurate insurer and product records.

  • Keep up to date with products and developments that could affect underwriting decisions.

  • Work closely with Operations on compliance matters and improvements to processes.

What you’ll bring

You’ll need at least three years’ experience in personal lines motor insurance, including motor insurance schemes and bespoke or niche risks.

You should also have:

  • Strong knowledge of motor risk factors and the ability to explain your underwriting judgement.

  • Experience monitoring insurer loss ratios and understanding underwriting performance.

  • Confidence managing insurer relationships and discussing technical referrals.

  • Clear communication skills and an approachable manner with colleagues.

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.

  • The initiative to work independently, alongside a willingness to learn and take feedback.

What success looks like

Within six months, the aim is for you to confidently own your area of responsibility: managing referrals, making sound decisions within agreed authority and moving work forward without needing constant direction.

As the business develops, there is scope to take on more responsibility. Progression will depend on your contribution, capabilities and the opportunities available.

Salary, benefits and working arrangements

  • £35,000–£55,000 basic salary, depending on experience. £55,000 is the maximum; there is no bonus attached to this role.

  • 3% employer pension contribution.

  • 21 days’ holiday — bank holiday arrangements to be confirmed.

  • Training, employee-of-the-month recognition and team socials.

  • Primarily office-based in Twickenham, with five office days preferred. Up to two days working from home may be considered where required.

  • Rotating weekday shifts: 8.30am–5.30pm, 9am–6pm and 10am–7pm.

  • One in three Saturdays, if required, working from home from 9am–3pm.

The interview process is expected to involve no more than two stages, with the hiring Director aiming to provide feedback within 24 hours.

If you’re ready to bring your motor insurance expertise to a growing team that values initiative and develops its people, we’d like to hear from you.
