Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Maintenance & Caretaking Operative to support the day-to-day upkeep, repair, and safe operation of our buildings. The successful candidate will undertake planned and reactive maintenance, carry out routine inspections and statutory compliance checks, and ensure facilities remain safe, secure, and operational. This is a hands-on role requiring the ability to work independently, use initiative, and support junior members of the maintenance team.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake emergency repairs, minor works, and planned preventative maintenance across operational buildings.
- Carry out routine maintenance and general repair work, identifying and resolving minor issues promptly.
- Complete regular building inspections and report maintenance issues to the Help Desk for allocation.
- Conduct statutory compliance checks and ensure records are maintained accurately.
- Perform weekly fire alarm testing and assist as a Fire Warden during planned and unplanned evacuations.
- Open and secure buildings as required and provide access to contractors, visitors, and other authorised personnel.
- Assess maintenance works, estimate labour and material costs, and obtain supplier quotations where necessary.
- Support the Senior Facilities Officer and provide guidance to other maintenance team members and junior staff.
- Maintain high standards of health and safety, security, and customer service across all sites.
Person Specification
Essential
- Proven experience in building maintenance, repairs, and caretaking services.
- Sound experience undertaking maintenance and repair work across a range of building systems.
- Ability to identify faults and resolve minor maintenance issues effectively.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Word and Outlook.
- Self-motivated, flexible, and able to work on own initiative with minimal supervision.
- Strong organisational and communication skills.
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures relating to building maintenance.
Desirable
- City & Guilds qualification in Plumbing, Carpentry, or a related trade.
- Experience carrying out statutory compliance inspections and fire safety checks.
- Previous experience supervising or supporting junior maintenance staff.
Reporting Structure
The post holder reports to the Senior Facilities Officer based at a local Depot and will provide support and guidance to other maintenance team members and junior staff as required.
Important Information
This is not a hybrid role. The successful candidate is required to attend the workplace in person on a full-time basis.
