The client:
A fast-growing business (ICP) specialising in the design and build of new utility networks that power communities. They ensure vital services (electricity, water, and gas) are connected and operational for the start of every new development. As part of their team, you will contribute to the planning, coordination, and execution of utility-related tasks that lay the foundation for successful project delivery.

a proactive Trainee Design Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, challenging environment to support the delivery of multi-utility infrastructure designs for residential, commercial, and industrial developments.
Working within the Pre-Construction and Design teams, this role provides exposure to the full design lifecycle, feasibility assessments, technical design, network submissions, stakeholder coordination, and design delivery, while you develop your technical capability across electricity, water, and gas infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Support
● Review technical information provided by clients, consultants, and contractors.
● Assist with reviewing site layouts, utility requirements, and development proposals.
● Identify missing information and assist with raising technical queries and Requests for Information (RFIs).
Support engineers with:
○ Load assessments
○ Cable sizing
○ Voltage drop calculations
○ Fault level considerations
○ Earthing requirements
○ Water demand assessments
○ Gas design assessment and co-ordination
Design Development
● Assist in developing LV, HV electrical network and water designs.
● Produce and amend utility design drawings using AutoCAD.
● Develop and amend electrical network models using VisNet and WinDEBUT under the supervision of experienced designers.
● Assist with the preparation of water and gas network layouts.
● Assist with preparing as-built drawings following construction completion.
● Incorporate design review comments and feedback from Design Engineers, clients, and network operators into design packages.
● Work in accordance with BGS design procedures, standards, and quality requirements.
● Ensure drawings, calculations, and technical information are accurate before issue.
● Maintain drawing revisions and design records.
Project Delivery
● Support multiple projects through the pre-construction and design process.
● Assist with maintaining design programmes, trackers, and project records.
● Liaise with internal teams including Estimating, Project Management, Construction, and Business Development.
● Support communication with external stakeholders including utility network operators, consultants, developers, and local authorities.
● Attend site visits where required to support design development and construction activities.
Learning & Development
● Develop knowledge of multi-utility infrastructure design and adoption processes, and gain experience working within regulated utility environments.
● Receive training and mentoring in AutoCAD, VisNet, and WinDEBUT, alongside utility design standards and network submission processes.
● Develop knowledge of relevant industry standards, including DNO and IDNO design requirements, NERS and WIRS requirements, gas distribution standards, and utility adoption procedures.
● Work towards professional development through structured training and mentoring.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential
● Minimum qualification of HNC or HND in an engineering discipline (Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Building Services, Utilities, or a related field).
● Strong interest in developing a career within the utilities and infrastructure sector.
● Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
● Ability to interpret technical drawings and engineering information.
● Good written and verbal communication skills.
● Good organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
● Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
● Full, valid UK driving licence.
● Right to work in the UK.
Desirable
● Experience or knowledge of AutoCAD, VisNet, or WinDEBUT.
● Degree qualification in an engineering discipline.
● Previous experience within utilities, construction, infrastructure, or engineering consultancy environments.
● Understanding of electrical networks, water networks, gas infrastructure, or construction processes.
● Some prior exposure to CAD or technical drawing software.
● Working towards professional registration with an engineering institution such as IET, ICE, or the Institute of Water.

With experience and continued development, the Utilities Trainee Design Engineer can progress towards roles such as:

● Design Manager
Our client is offering:
£35,000 - £45,000p.a (DOE)
