Role Summary
Rubicon Consulting is recruiting experienced Mechanical Fitters on behalf of Tier 1 framework contractors delivering critical national infrastructure across National Grid, SSEN Transmission and SP Energy Networks (SPEN) programmes. These are long-term, rolling contract positions offering continuity of work across multiple live substation and transmission projects for candidates operating through their own Limited Company.
Successful applicants will be deployed to HV/EHV substation and associated mechanical installation works, with the opportunity to move between projects as programme demand dictates — offering strong job security and sustained earning potential for the right candidates.
Key Responsibilities:
- Mechanical installation, assembly and fit-out of plant and equipment within live and new-build HV/EHV substation environments
- Installation of switchgear, transformers, busbars, earthing systems, cable support systems, structural steelwork and associated mechanical fixings
- Installation and mechanical support of GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) equipment in line with manufacturer and client specifications
- Working from engineering drawings, method statements and RAMS to a high standard of accuracy and finish
- Carrying out pre-use checks on plant and equipment and reporting defects through the correct channels
- Working safely and collaboratively within multi-disciplinary site teams across mechanical, electrical and civils
- Completing all required quality documentation, ITPs and sign-off records as work progresses
- Maintaining full compliance with client and framework-specific site safety standards at all times
Requirements:
- Proven experience as a Mechanical Fitter within high-voltage substation, power transmission or wider critical infrastructure environments
- Hands-on experience with busbar installation and alignment, earthing systems, and GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) equipment
- Valid CSCS/ECS card and relevant trade qualifications (NVQ Level 2/3 Mechanical Engineering or equivalent)
- Strong understanding of RAMS, permit-to-work systems and safe systems of work on live infrastructure sites
- Willingness and ability to travel to and work across multiple UK project sites as required
- Must operate and be engaged through a Limited Company for the duration of the contract
Tickets & Certifications:
Candidates must either already hold, or be willing to invest in obtaining, the following tickets to maximise deployability across projects. Rubicon can advise on training routes for candidates without a full portfolio:
-Lifting Operations Supervisor (LOLER Appointed Person / Lift Supervisor)
-Slinger/Signaller
-Telehandler (RTITB/CPCS or equivalent)
-360° Excavator / Roto Telehandler
-IPAF (MEWP categories relevant to site — e.g. 1b/3a/3b)
-First Aid at Work (desirable)
-Relevant Client Authorisations (NG persons, SSE or SPEN.)
