Mechanical Bias Engineer

Salary: £50,000 per annum, paid weekly

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Bias Engineer to join our engineering team. Reporting primarily to the Engineering Supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all site facilities, production equipment and machinery operate safely, reliably and efficiently.

The role will provide both reactive and planned preventative maintenance, with a strong mechanical focus, while also supporting the wider engineering function when required. The successful candidate will play an important role in maintaining production performance, reducing machinery downtime and contributing to continuous improvement across the site.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on production machinery, plant and site facilities.

Respond quickly and effectively to mechanical breakdowns, diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs.

Identify recurring mechanical issues and recommend improvements to increase equipment reliability.

Complete routine inspections and condition checks on machinery and plant.

Support installation, modification and commissioning of mechanical equipment.

Work safely and efficiently while minimising production downtime.

Maintain accurate maintenance records and complete relevant engineering documentation.

Assist with the planning and prioritisation of maintenance activities.

Work closely with production and engineering colleagues to ensure equipment is maintained to a high standard.

Assist with contractor management and ensure work is completed safely and to the required standard.

Ensure all maintenance activities comply with company procedures, health & safety requirements and relevant legislation.

Contribute to continuous improvement projects across the site.

Provide support to the wider engineering team where required.

The Ideal Candidate

To succeed in this role, you will ideally have:

  • A recognised Mechanical Engineering qualification, such as NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Maintenance.
  • A recognised apprenticeship or equivalent practical engineering training.
  • HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification would be advantageous.
  • Significant experience working as a mechanical maintenance engineer within a manufacturing, food production or industrial environment.
  • Strong practical knowledge of mechanical systems, machinery and production equipment.
  • Experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, pumps, bearings, gearboxes, conveyors, drives and mechanical power transmission systems.
  • Experience carrying out both planned preventative maintenance and reactive breakdown repairs.
  • A good understanding of engineering health & safety requirements, including safe isolation and permit-to-work procedures.
  • Good fault-finding and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a busy engineering team.
  • A proactive approach to identifying problems and improving equipment reliability.
  • Good computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and maintenance management systems.

You will need to be self-motivated, reliable and resilient, with the ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced production environment.

Shift Pattern

This is a Panama shift pattern, working 2 weeks of days followed by 2 weeks of nights, on a 12-hour shift.

2 Weeks Days – 8:00am to 8:00pm
2 Weeks Nights – 8:00pm to 8:00am

The shift pattern provides a structured rotation of working and rest days, including weekends as part of the normal shift cycle.
