Our client is looking for an experienced Plant Fitter to maintain and repair fixed and mobile plant equipment at their Waste Transfer Station and Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).

The role involves carrying out planned maintenance, responding to breakdowns, diagnosing faults, and completing repairs to keep the site operating safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM).
  • Diagnose faults and repair plant machinery to minimise downtime.
  • Maintain conveyors, screens, trommels, motors, gearboxes, bearings, belts and hydraulic systems.
  • Service and repair mobile plant, including loading shovels, excavators, shredders and site vehicles.
  • Carry out minor repairs to HGV operating equipment.
  • Complete welding, fabrication and mechanical repairs where required.
  • Inspect equipment and replace worn or damaged components.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records.
  • Support continuous improvements to plant reliability and performance.
  • Work closely with the operations team to ensure minimal disruption.
  • Carry out minor repairs to site buildings and infrastructure.
  • Follow all health and safety procedures and wear the appropriate PPE.
  • Participate in overtime or on-call duties when required.

Essential Requirements

  • NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or equivalent mechanical engineering qualification.
  • Experience maintaining industrial plant in waste, recycling, quarrying, manufacturing or another heavy industry.
  • Strong mechanical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Good knowledge of hydraulics, gearboxes, motors, bearings and conveyor systems.
  • Ability to read technical drawings and manuals.
  • Confident using workshop tools and maintenance equipment.
  • Able to work independently and prioritise workload.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable Skills

  • Welding and fabrication experience (MIG/MMA).
  • Experience working within a recycling or waste processing environment.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems and control panels.
  • Experience with HGV mechanical systems.
  • Plant licences (Excavator, Loading Shovel, Forklift or MEWP).
  • First Aid qualification.

Training can be provided for relevant plant licences and additional certifications.

Working Environment

This is a hands-on role based in both workshop and outdoor environments. The position involves exposure to dust, noise, changing weather conditions, manual handling and occasional working at height. Overtime and some weekend work may be required to support the operation.
