Principal Electrical Engineer – Data Centres

Hybrid working

Salary: £90,000 - £110,000 plus up to 10% bonus, pension and healthcare

An established engineering design consultancy is looking to appoint a Principal Electrical Engineer to support the delivery of major data centre and mission-critical projects across UK and Europe.

This is an opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with a strong data centre background to take a leading role in electrical design, technical delivery and project management, while developing client relationships and supporting the wider engineering team.

The Role:

You will take technical ownership of electrical engineering packages across a range of data centre projects, leading design development from concept and feasibility through detailed design, construction and commissioning.

Responsibilities will include:-

• Leading the electrical design and delivery of major data centre projects.
• Developing and reviewing electrical designs covering HV/MV/LV distribution, transformers, switchgear, UPS systems, generators and associated power infrastructure.
• Preparing and reviewing technical calculations, load assessments, single-line diagrams, specifications and equipment schedules.
• Managing electrical design packages, ensuring technical quality, programme and agreed project deliverables are achieved.
• Coordinating multidisciplinary design teams, contractors, vendors and external consultants.
• Providing technical guidance, mentoring and reviewing the work of junior engineers and design staff.
• Managing client relationships, attending design meetings and representing the consultancy on technical matters.
• Supporting project commercial management, including resource planning, scope control, budgets and additional services.
• Providing technical support during construction, commissioning and project handover.

Experience & Background

The successful candidate will ideally bring:

• A degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or equivalent.
• Approximately 8–10+ years' electrical engineering design experience.
• Strong, recent experience delivering electrical designs for data centres or other mission-critical facilities.
• Experience with hyperscale, colocation or large-scale critical infrastructure projects.
• A background within an engineering design or MEP consultancy.
• Proven experience leading electrical design packages and managing project delivery.
• Strong technical knowledge of HV/MV/LV systems, UPS, generators, switchgear and electrical resilience.
• Experience with power system analysis software such as ETAP, SKM or equivalent.
• Familiarity with relevant IEC, EN 50600 and Irish electrical standards.
• Strong client-facing, communication and multidisciplinary coordination skills.

Chartered Engineer status (CEng) through Engineers Ireland, CIBSE, IET or equivalent would be advantageous, although candidates working towards Chartership will also be considered.
