We're recruiting for a Principal Engineer to join a highly successful contractor delivering major infrastructure, water, energy, environmental and civil engineering projects across the UK.

This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced engineer to take a strategic technical leadership role, influencing projects from feasibility and tender stage through to delivery and completion.

Ideal for candidates currently working within a civil engineering consultancy, contractor or multidisciplinary engineering environment who are looking to take ownership of project strategy, technical excellence and engineering innovation on major infrastructure schemes.

The Role

As Principal Engineer, you will lead engineering input across a diverse portfolio of civil engineering projects, providing technical leadership throughout pre-construction, design development, tendering and project delivery phases.

Acting as a key technical authority within the business, you will support clients, delivery teams and stakeholders by developing buildable, innovative and commercially successful engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering input from feasibility and concept design through to project delivery.
  • Provide technical leadership during tender and bid submissions.
  • Develop construction methodologies, engineering strategies and sequencing plans.
  • Undertake buildability reviews, value engineering exercises and technical risk assessments.
  • Drive engineering excellence across pre-construction and project delivery teams.
  • Develop and review temporary and permanent works solutions.
  • Support planning, programming and construction methodology development.
  • Act as a technical advisor to clients, consultants, operational teams and stakeholders.
  • Champion sustainable engineering solutions and modern methods of construction.
  • Support compliance with CDM Regulations and Principal Designer duties where required.
  • Capture lessons learned and promote continuous improvement throughout the business.
  • Mentor and develop engineers, helping build technical capability across the organisation.
  • Represent the business during technical reviews, client presentations and stakeholder meetings.

What We're Looking For

-Significant experience within civil engineering, infrastructure, water, energy or environmental projects.

-Strong understanding of engineering design, construction methodologies and project delivery.

-Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and managing technical workflows.

-Proven ability to identify, manage and mitigate technical risk.

-Strong commercial awareness and understanding of project constraints.

-Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

-Ability to translate complex technical issues into clear, practical and buildable solutions.

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree, HNC or HND in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or actively working towards chartership.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

Highly Desirable

  • Water, utilities, energy or major infrastructure experience.
  • Strong understanding of buildability reviews and value engineering.
  • Temporary Works experience.
  • CDM and Principal Designer experience.
  • AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit or similar engineering software experience.
  • Knowledge of flood risk, environmental permitting and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS).
  • Experience supporting major framework agreements and infrastructure tenders.
