Principal Offshore Structural Engineer
Orion Group
The role spans traditional oil and gas, as well as energy transition projects including CCS, hydrogen and other low-carbon infrastructure. Offering significant technical autonomy and international project exposure, you'll work across greenfield and brownfield developments while mentoring engineers and collaborating within multidisciplinary teams.
The Role:
- Establish and manage internal workflows for assigned projects, planning and coordinating team activities to ensure engineering deliverables are completed efficiently, accurately, and in line with project schedules and requirements.
- Perform structural analysis for offshore substructures and topsides, applying appropriate engineering methods and standards to assess structural integrity, performance, and suitability throughout the project lifecycle.
- Evaluate and define optimal technical solutions for offshore structures across multiple design stages, including feasibility studies, FEED, and detailed design, ensuring solutions are safe, practical, cost-effective, and aligned with project objectives.
- Review and verify technical documentation, calculations, and engineering analyses produced by the team, ensuring quality, accuracy, compliance with standards, and readiness for project submission.
- Develop concept studies, feasibility assessments, and engineering sketches to support design development, technical decision-making, and early-stage project definition.
- Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, project management, planners, and offshore resources to coordinate workload, resolve technical challenges, and deliver project scopes safely and effectively within agreed timelines.
Required Experience:
- Degree in an appropriate engineering discipline such as Civil Engineering, Offshore Engineering, Structural Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (with focus on structures).
- Demonstrable experience in design of structures in all project phases (feasibility study, FEED, detailed engineering, and Operations).
- Extensive experience in the analysis and design of offshore structures, including fixed offshore platforms, jackets, and topsides, in accordance with recognised industry standards such as ISO 1900 series, API RP2A, and AISC codes.
- Proven capability in developing, reviewing, and validating Finite Element Method (FEM) models for offshore structures, including assessment of in-place, temporary, and complex loading conditions, ensuring structural integrity and compliance with project requirements.
- Strong expertise in offshore structural assessment, including brownfield modifications, life extension studies, reliability assessments, nonlinear analysis, blast and dropped object evaluations, impact assessments, redundancy checks, and pushover analyses, with the ability to develop practical engineering solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate structural engineering teams, manage project workloads, interface with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders, provide technical guidance to junior engineers, and support successful delivery of offshore projects within schedule and quality requirements.
