We're looking for a Project Design Engineer to join our engineering team in Aldridge. Working predominantly within our multi-award-winning Conversions Division, you’ll take bespoke shipping container conversions from initial concept through to production.
This is a varied, hands-on design role combining 3D modelling and technical drawing with project planning, procurement and close work with our workshop. If you have a strong grounding in mechanical engineering or product design and enjoy seeing your designs built, this could be the role for you.
About the Role
S Jones Containers is a leader in bespoke shipping container conversions. These large fabrications are designed, manufactured and modified on site in Aldridge to suit each customer's bespoke requirements.
As Project Design Engineer, you'll work on new projects and existing product ranges, taking responsibility for robust design from concept through to production validation. You'll produce the technical information our workshop builds from, including 3D models, 2D general arrangement and manufacturing drawings, technical specifications and bills of materials.
Beyond the design itself, you'll plan how each project comes together. That means breaking designs down into materials and component lists, sourcing suppliers and purchasing project-specific materials, and creating task sequences that help the workshop plan production efficiently. You'll work closely with the shop floor, engineering colleagues and customers to make sure every design meets the customer's requirements and is correctly interpreted in production.
What You'll Be Doing
- Undertaking design work on new projects and existing product ranges, from concept through to production validation.
- Creating designs and technical CAD general arrangement and manufacturing drawings for container modification and general fabrication projects.
- Preparing project engineering data for new assemblies and components, including technical specifications, BOMs and 3D/2D drawings.
- Investigating design factors and taking responsibility for the robust design of products.
- Ensuring designs meet customer requirements and liaising with customers on technical and design matters.
- Breaking down designs to produce materials and components lists for pricing and purchasing.
- Identifying where goods, services and subcontract elements are required, sourcing suppliers and best prices, and purchasing project-specific materials, ensuring they are correctly identified for each project on delivery.
- Creating 'order of events' task lists for each project, organising factors such as materials lead times and sub-assembly production to support workshop planning.
- Working with the shop floor and engineering colleagues to ensure technical information is correctly interpreted, resolving any discrepancies and putting methods in place to prevent recurrence.
- Maintaining an organised library of drawings and sketches for proposed and live projects and for common components such as doors, windows and frames.
- Helping to develop and improve working methods, standard documents, procedures and systems within the technical design area.
- Supporting colleagues and other appropriate duties during periods of absence and as the business grows.
About You
We're looking for someone with a solid foundation in mechanical engineering and product design who is self-motivated, works accurately and enjoys being part of a small team in a busy manufacturing environment.
You'll also bring:
- An HND or degree in an engineering discipline, ideally mechanical engineering or product design.
- Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and product design processes.
- Experience of 3D modelling using Autodesk Inventor 2026.
- Experience of working within a busy manufacturing environment.
- The ability to complete work accurately, completely and to agreed deadlines.
- An organised, methodical approach to managing drawings and project information.
- Confident communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with the shop floor, engineering colleagues and customers.
- A strong awareness of customer needs and a professional approach when representing the business.
- A commitment to health and safety and a willingness to continually develop your knowledge of the business.
Why Join Us?
We're investing in both equipment and skills to secure a strong future for the business. This is an opportunity to play a central part in that, working on bespoke projects where you'll see your designs through from first concept to finished fabrication.
You'll gain broad experience across design, project planning and procurement, with training provided on our company software. We also offer a pension scheme, group life assurance, 25 days' holiday plus 8 bank holidays and onsite parking.
Application opens at the source listing. Free for jobseekers.
