Contract Project Engineer – North West – Hybrid – Inside IR35

About the Role

Our client is looking to recruit a proactive and detail-oriented Project Engineer to join a growing team delivering wastewater network improvement projects. The role offers the opportunity to contribute across technical, commercial, and operational aspects of projects, ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently, and within financial constraints.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Programme Managers in developing a prioritised programme of work that balances customer requirements, operational performance, health & safety, and financial constraints.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, commercial partners, framework contractors, and specialist service providers to identify optimal solutions and delivery routes.
  • Liaise with internal teams and customers to arrange appointments for surveys, inspections, works, and final checks; support analysts in maintaining accurate corporate system records.
  • Prepare all project-related documentation, including pre-site meeting packs, PCI packs, and project handovers, ensuring accurate project pricing.
  • Coordinate notices to landowners or occupiers to gain access to private land as required.
  • Review and agree draft Operations & Maintenance manuals, Health & Safety files, and ‘As-Built’ drawings with Field and Maintenance teams; ensure alignment with commercial and operational requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with wastewater network policies, procedures, Environment Agency protocols, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide day-to-day technical, contractual, and commercial support to delivery teams and other stakeholders; assist in resolving complex contractual and commercial issues.
  • Identify synergies and best practices across internal teams, contractors, and partners; support training and knowledge-sharing initiatives as required.

Candidate Requirements

Essential:

  • Below Degree or HNC in Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, or minimum of 5 years’ relevant wastewater network experience
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of the sewer network and maintenance techniques
  • Basic understanding and experience of pumping station operation principles
  • Basic knowledge of Health and Safety standards, including CDM Regulations and NRSWA
  • Ability to use computer systems for reporting
  • Good communication and analytical skills
  • Ability to supervise contractor activities where necessary
  • Capable of planning and controlling resources to meet standards of service

Desirable:

  • Experience working with framework contractors and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Knowledge of UK water company processes and standards
  • Understanding of land access requirements and notice coordination
