The Opportunity

We are recruiting an experienced Project Engineer to join a well-established engineering business based in Dudley.

This is an excellent opportunity for a practical, solutions-focused engineer who enjoys taking ownership of projects and working directly with customers, workshop teams, suppliers and subcontractors.

You will be involved in a diverse range of mechanical engineering projects across multiple industries, managing work from the initial customer enquiry and site survey through to quotation, manufacture, installation and successful completion.

The role would suit an experienced engineer with a strong mechanical background who is equally comfortable on a customer site, reviewing engineering drawings or working alongside workshop and commercial teams.

Key Responsibilities

Project & Customer Management

Manage engineering projects from initial enquiry through to completion.

Act as a key point of contact for customers throughout project delivery.

Conduct customer site visits and surveys to assess engineering requirements.

Define project scope and produce technical notes and supporting documentation.

Coordinate machining, fabrication, repair, subcontractor and on-site engineering activities.

Monitor project progress, costs and timescales.

Provide clear project updates to customers and internal teams.

Manage multiple projects and enquiries while maintaining priorities and deadlines.

Technical & Commercial

Review customer drawings, specifications, samples and repair requirements.

Support reverse-engineering projects, developing practical repair and manufacturing solutions.

Prepare accurate technical and commercial quotations.

Liaise closely with workshop teams regarding manufacturing methods and project progress.

Work with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain pricing, lead times and technical information.

Produce technical reports and support engineering troubleshooting activities.

Identify opportunities to improve customer solutions and develop additional business.

Site & Health and Safety

  • Assess site projects and identify access, lifting, isolation and operational requirements.
  • Prepare Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), with additional training provided where required.
  • Ensure projects are planned and delivered safely in accordance with company and customer requirements.
  • Attend customer sites when required, including occasional visits at short notice.

About You

We are looking for a hands-on engineering professional who combines strong technical knowledge with excellent customer communication, organisation and commercial awareness.

Essential Experience

You should have:

A minimum of 5 years’ experience within a mechanical engineering environment.

Strong practical mechanical engineering knowledge.

The ability to assess engineering requirements on customer sites.

Experience interpreting engineering drawings and technical specifications.

A practical, proactive and solutions-focused approach to engineering problems.

Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Confidence communicating with customers, suppliers, subcontractors and internal engineering teams.

Good commercial awareness, including an understanding of project costs, lead times and scope.

Competent Microsoft Office skills.

A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to customer sites.

Experience in any of the following would be particularly advantageous:

Machining and fabrication

Rotating equipment including pumps, motors, gearboxes and fans

Industrial maintenance and repair

Site surveys and project scoping

Reverse engineering from samples or existing equipment

Project management

Customer account support

Quotation and estimating

RAMS and site documentation

Heavy industrial, manufacturing or process environments

Customer-facing engineering roles
