Quantity Surveyor
Walker & Sloan
Quantity Surveyor
Location: Filton, Bristol
Sector: Defence / General Works
Salary: £50,000 - £60,000 + Package
The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Quantity Surveyor to join the General Works team of a specialist contractor delivering technically interesting projects across the defence sector.
Based in Filton, Bristol, you'll work with some of the UK's largest organisations, delivering a varied portfolio of refurbishments, installations, new-build projects and ongoing infrastructure works.
The projects can range from traditional building works through to secure areas, controlled-access environments, offices, accommodation and specialist infrastructure. It's an excellent opportunity if you enjoy variety rather than being tied to one repetitive type of construction project.
You'll become part of an established commercial team but will be trusted to take ownership of your own projects and responsibilities, giving you the autonomy to manage projects commercially whilst still having experienced people around you when needed.
Role Overview
As Quantity Surveyor, you'll take commercial responsibility for your allocated projects, ensuring they are effectively managed from procurement through to final account.
You'll work closely with Project Managers and site teams to understand how each project is progressing, maintaining accurate commercial reporting and forecasting while keeping a close eye on cost, value, cash and profitability.
You'll take ownership of subcontract procurement, from preparing enquiries and attending pre-contract meetings through to placing orders and commercially managing subcontractors throughout delivery. You'll make sure payments are accurate and timely, monitor performance against programme and resolve commercial issues as they arise.
Cost reporting will form an important part of your role. You'll assist with CVRs, monitor expenditure against budget, forecast cash recovery and ensure applications for payment are submitted accurately and on time.
You'll also be expected to understand the contractual position of your projects. Whether you're dealing with variations, additional payments, changes in scope or potential claims, you'll work closely with project leadership to ensure the business receives its full contractual entitlement.
Importantly, this isn't a role where you'll simply sit behind a spreadsheet. You'll work closely with clients, subcontractors and the operational team, building strong relationships and helping identify solutions that improve both project delivery and commercial performance.
About You
You are an experienced Quantity Surveyor with practical experience working on building and construction projects and are comfortable taking ownership of your own commercial responsibilities.
You'll understand procurement and subcontract management, together with the fundamentals of cost/value reporting, forecasting, applications for payment and final accounts. You'll also have a working understanding of the main forms of construction contract and the commercial principles that sit behind them.
You're commercially aware but also understand that successful projects depend on relationships. You'll be confident communicating and negotiating with clients, subcontractors and colleagues while protecting the commercial interests of the business.
You'll be organised, capable of managing competing deadlines and comfortable working both independently and as part of a wider project team.
Ideally, you'll hold an HNC, HND or Degree in Quantity Surveying, whether achieved through a traditional or apprenticeship route. Working towards RICS, CIOB or another relevant professional membership would also be advantageous.
Company Profile
You'll be joining an established specialist design, construction and engineering contractor delivering projects across technically demanding and highly regulated sectors.
The business has more than 40 years of industry experience and works with major clients across the UK, providing everything from new-build construction through to refurbishment, installation and the ongoing improvement of existing facilities.
Within its General Works division, you'll have exposure to a particularly varied portfolio of projects, giving you the opportunity to broaden your commercial experience while developing within a supportive and growing construction business.
