School Premises Officer / Caretaker

Tradewind Recruitment

Location: Barnoldswick (Barlick), Lancashire

Salary: £24,500 - £25,500 FTE (Depending on experience)

Job Type: Full-time, Temporary to Permanent

Hours: Split Shifts (Monday to Friday, including morning site opening and evening lock-up)

Are you looking for a rewarding, hands-on role where you can take ownership of a school campus and make a real difference to vulnerable young people?

We are seeking a proactive, reliable, and practical Premises Officer / Caretaker to join an Alternative Provision team in Barnoldswick, Lancashire. The school provides a nurturing, flexible education for secondary-aged pupils who thrive outside of mainstream school environments.

This role is a perfect transition for an ex-military professional, experienced multi-trader, or grounds maintenance specialist who wants a structured, stable role with a purpose. You do not need prior school experience-your practical skills, discipline, and calm demeanour are what matter most.

The Role

As the Premises Officer, you are the backbone of the school's daily operations. You will maintain a safe, clean, and secure environment, splitting your time between general building maintenance, grounds care, and routine cleaning.

  • Site Security & Keyholding: Act as the primary keyholder to open up the campus in the morning and perform secure lock-up procedures at night.

  • General Maintenance: Undertake minor DIY, basic repairs, and general troubleshooting safely and promptly.

  • Health & Safety Compliance: Conduct and meticulously log critical statutory safety checks, including fire alarms, emergency lighting, and water temperature monitoring (legionella).

  • Cleaning & Grounds: Support the hygiene of the school with daily and deep cleaning duties, as well as grounds upkeep like litter picking and winter gritting.

  • Contractor Supervision: Monitor external contractors visiting the site to ensure they comply with strict health, safety, and safeguarding procedures.

What We Are Looking For

  • Practical Skills: Solid experience in basic repairs, building maintenance, caretaking, or a hands-on trade.

  • Calm & Professional: A level-headed individual who is reliable and stays calm in challenging situations.

  • An Active Mindset: Happy to manage a diverse, physical workload that splits between indoor setup and outdoor grounds maintenance.

  • Driving Licence: A full UK driving licence with access to your own vehicle is highly desirable, as you may occasionally support other local campuses.

Our Culture & Safeguarding

"It could happen here." The school maintains an open culture and a high level of vigilance to keep vulnerable young people safe. The setting operates a strict safe touch, no restraint policy.

Because this role involves working within a vulnerable youth environment, all successful applicants must agree to an Enhanced DBS check, two reference checks, and complete a comprehensive safer recruitment process. Full, intense induction training and safeguarding CPD will be provided.

What We Offer

  • Supportive Environment: Access to an ongoing CPD toolkit, regular coaching, and a structured probationary induction to set you up for success.

  • August Start: Begin ahead of the new academic year to get fully embedded into the team and campus layout.
