SEN / SEMH Teacher – Specialist Education Setting

Location: Colchester, Essex
Salary: £35,000 – £46,000 per annum, dependent on experience
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time
Start Date: September 2026

Luma Education Recruitment is recruiting for a SEN / SEMH Teacher to join a specialist education setting in Colchester, Essex.

This permanent teaching role is suitable for an experienced SEN Teacher, SEMH Teacher, Special Educational Needs Teacher, Alternative Provision Teacher or PRU Teacher who is confident supporting young people with additional needs, social, emotional and mental health needs and challenging behaviour.

About the SEN Teacher Role

The successful teacher will work with a very small number of pupils, providing personalised teaching and support based on individual educational needs.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering engaging, differentiated lessons.
  • Teaching pupils with SEN, SEMH, EBD and complex behavioural needs.
  • Creating a calm, structured and supportive learning environment.
  • Supporting pupils who may have experienced trauma, disrupted education or barriers to learning.
  • Monitoring and assessing pupil progress.
  • Contributing to EHCP and PEP reviews.
  • Supporting pupils to develop confidence, independence and positive attitudes towards education.
  • Working closely with colleagues, care staff and other professionals.
  • Supporting positive behaviour through consistent and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Maintaining high standards of safeguarding and professional practice.

The role involves delivering a broad and personalised curriculum, which may include:

  • Maths
  • Functional Skills
  • GCSE-level learning
  • Vocational qualifications
  • Personal development and life skills

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • QTS, QTLS or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
  • Experience teaching children or young people with SEN or SEMH needs.
  • Experience managing challenging behaviour effectively.
  • A calm, patient and consistent approach.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • The ability to differentiate teaching for individual learning needs.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing.

Experience in a special school, SEMH school, alternative provision, PRU, pupil referral unit, residential education setting or similar specialist environment would be highly desirable.
