Help Young People with Autism Thrive at Secondary School

Teach Now is recruiting an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant with a strong understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for a long-term secondary-school role in Enfield.

This position would suit someone who understands that successful autism support is not simply about helping a pupil complete a task. It is about creating consistency, reducing barriers to learning and helping young people develop the communication, confidence and independence they need to succeed in secondary education.

You may work with individual pupils and small groups across KS3, KS4 and KS5, supporting both academic learning and the wider demands of secondary-school life.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Providing targeted one-to-one and small-group support for pupils with ASD
  • Helping pupils understand lesson expectations and break down complex tasks
  • Supporting communication, social interaction and emotional regulation
  • Using visual resources, structured routines and individual support strategies
  • Preparing pupils for changes to lessons, teachers or daily routines
  • Supporting sensory needs and helping pupils access appropriate regulation strategies
  • Encouraging independence rather than creating unnecessary reliance on adult support
  • Working closely with subject teachers, the SENCO and wider inclusion team
  • Supporting pupils during transitions and less structured parts of the school day
  • Recording progress, concerns and successful strategies accurately
What We’re Looking For

You should have:

  • Previous experience supporting children or young people with autism
  • Experience in a secondary school, SEN provision or comparable setting
  • A good understanding of autism and neurodiversity
  • Calm and consistent behaviour-management skills
  • Strong communication and relationship-building ability
  • The confidence to support pupils across different secondary subjects
  • A professional, patient and adaptable approach
  • The right to work in the UK
  • An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one
  • Suitable professional references covering recent experience

Experience with PECS, visual communication systems, sensory regulation, social communication programmes or additional learning difficulties would be advantageous.

What the School Can Offer
  • A knowledgeable and supportive SEND department
  • Clear individual support plans and established routines
  • Opportunities to work closely with specialist professionals
  • Experience across KS3, KS4 and potentially sixth form
  • A long-term role where you can build meaningful relationships with pupils
  • Valuable professional development for anyone pursuing a career in SEND, education or psychology
Salary determined according to relevant experience, qualifications and the requirements of the placement.
