Shape the Health & Wellbeing Strategy for Britain's Largest Infrastructure Programme

Charlton Recruitment is proud to be recruiting on behalf of HS2 Ltd for an Occupational Health & Wellbeing Manager to join one of the UK's most significant infrastructure programmes.

This is a rare opportunity to influence the health, wellbeing and occupational health standards of a workforce of over 34,000 people delivering the new High-Speed Railway.

Reporting to the Head of Occupational Health, you'll play a strategic leadership role, ensuring HS2's Tier 1 contractors and their supply chains deliver occupational health standards that exceed statutory requirements. You'll also oversee the performance of HS2's Occupational Health service providers, ensuring high-quality services are delivered across the organisation.

Please note: This is not an Occupational Health Practitioner role and does not involve managing patients or carrying a clinical caseload. Instead, this is a strategic programme management and assurance position focused on governance, contractor assurance, service management and continuous improvement.

The Role

Working across the entire HS2 programme, you will support the development and delivery of HS2's Occupational Health & Wellbeing Strategy, providing expert advice and assurance to senior leaders while driving improvements in workforce health across one of Europe's largest construction programmes.

You'll work collaboratively with Tier 1 contractors, occupational health providers, Health & Safety teams, HR, engineering functions and senior stakeholders to ensure occupational health risks are effectively identified, managed and continuously improved.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development and implementation of HS2's Occupational Health & Wellbeing Strategy.
  • Lead occupational health assurance activities across Tier 1 contractors and the wider supply chain.
  • Monitor contractor performance, ensuring contractual occupational health and wellbeing requirements are achieved and continuously improved.
  • Manage HS2's Occupational Health service providers, ensuring services are effective, compliant and deliver value.
  • Undertake contractor prequalification assessments and support tender evaluations.
  • Analyse occupational health data and performance trends, producing reports and recommendations to support informed decision-making.
  • Develop and maintain occupational health standards, policies, procedures and improvement initiatives.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of occupational health services, wellbeing programmes and interventions.
  • Provide expert advice to senior leaders, HR, Health & Safety teams, engineering functions and joint venture health leads.
  • Promote a culture of prevention, early intervention and continuous improvement across the programme.
  • Support strategic projects that enhance workforce health, wellbeing and organisational performance.

About You

You'll be an experienced Occupational Health professional with the credibility to influence senior stakeholders and drive improvements across complex, high-risk programmes involving multiple contractors and service providers.

This role would suit someone with experience in construction, infrastructure, rail, engineering, manufacturing, oil & gas, chemicals, utilities, defence, nuclear or another highly regulated environment.

You'll bring:

  • Degree-level qualification in Occupational Health, Nursing, Health Sciences or another relevant discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong knowledge of occupational health legislation, industry standards and professional best practice.
  • Experience developing or implementing occupational health strategies within complex organisations.
  • Experience managing occupational health providers or contractor assurance programmes.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across senior leadership teams and supply chains.
  • Experience using health data, reporting and performance metrics to identify trends and drive continuous improvement.
  • A proven track record of delivering successful occupational health, wellbeing or health improvement programmes.
  • Strong project management, governance and service improvement experience.

Why Join HS2?

This is an opportunity to influence the health and wellbeing of one of the UK’s largest construction workforces while helping to shape best practice across a nationally significant programme.

  • Hybrid working and an excellent benefits package.
  • Exposure to one of Europe's largest infrastructure programmes.
  • The opportunity to make a lasting impact on workforce health, wellbeing and safety.
