Senior Quantity Surveyor

The Role:

BCS are seeking a Senior Quantity Surveyor to work with its fabrications team.  The fabrications team delivers a variety of steelwork projects supporting major infrastructure works both within our group of companies and for external clients.  The role will cover traditional quantity surveying activities and see you demonstrating your commercial acumen, by identifying, recording, tracking and realising commercial opportunities, whilst mitigating business risk.

Key Responsibilities:

Commercial Strategy & Profitability

Drive the commercial management of projects to maximise profitability, monitor margin performance, identify risks and opportunities, and implement corrective actions where necessary.

Cost and Value Reporting

The preparation of monthly cost and value reports encompassing detailed forecasts and analysis of expected resource utilization, cashflow forecasts and risk and opportunities assessments.

Contract Review and Administration

The review of contracts to identify risks and suitability for acceptance and the administration of live contracts to ensure all notice requirements are met, full entitlements to payments and changes to contract sums are secured, and final accounts are signed off. Where appropriate support the resolution of commercial disputes through effective contract administration, negotiation and evidence-based submissions.

Process Improvements

Proactively work with the team to identify efficiencies in commercial processes and ways of working, propose and implement changes based on improvements identified.

Record Keeping

Ensure accurate records are kept of site activities and works delivered to ensure that variances from tender expectations are understood and all contract entitlements to additional payment are supported,

Supply Chain Management

The negotiation, placement and management of subcontracts ensuring procurement and administration in line with company processes.

Risk Management

Lead the identification, assessment and management of commercial risks and opportunities throughout the project lifecycle, maintaining appropriate risk registers and mitigation plans.

Key measures & targets:

The timely issue of all contractual notices and monthly reports, the full recovery of any contractual entitlements, supporting the team to deliver projects in line with tender expectations, the provision of accurate reconciliations and forecasts.

Key relationships:

The role will report of the Head of Commercial but will work closely with the Business Unit Director, Head of Fabrications and Head of Finance.

Person Specification:

The successful candidate is likely to meet all of the following criteria:

Essential

  • Previous experience in fabrications
  • Familiarity with IChemE/ NEC forms of contract and knowledge and understanding of Construction Law
  • Previous experience in commercial management and procurement of subcontractors, including chairing regular meetings, measurement and control cycle, certificates, and accruals calculations
  • Demonstrable experience in monthly forecasting and cost analysis.
  • Excellent communication, numeric and computer literacy skills, proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills, with the ability to work effectively under tight deadlines

Desirable

  • Member of RICS or other relevant professional body
  • CSCS card
  • HND/degree (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience in estimation
  • Experience working for a direct delivery contractor
