Senior Quantity Surveyor
Location: Office Based - Hatfield, Hertfordshire, with UK Site Visits
Naughton Contracts Ltd is a young, ambitious civil engineering company delivering groundworks, earthworks, basements, site set-up and enabling, and civil engineering solutions across residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects. Including major data centre developments. We're looking for a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our team at our Hatfield head office and play a key role in the commercial management of our projects, from pre-construction through to final account.
About the Role
As Senior Quantity Surveyor, you'll take commercial responsibility for a portfolio of projects across our core service areas. Groundworks, earthworks, basements, civil engineering, and site set-up/enabling. Managing costs, valuations, and subcontractor accounts to protect margin and support successful project delivery, with regular visits to UK sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the commercial and financial performance of allocated projects, from pre-construction through to final account.
- Prepare and submit interim valuations and applications for payment to clients.
- Measure and value completed works, variations, and change instructions.
- Procure, manage, and value subcontractor packages, including agreeing final accounts. Prepare monthly cost/value reconciliations (CVRs) and report on project financial performance to senior management.
- Identify, manage, and mitigate commercial risk across projects, including claims and disputes. Review contracts and ensure compliance with contractual terms and obligations. Conduct regular site visits to monitor progress, verify measurements, and liaise with site management teams.
- Support and mentor junior quantity surveyors within the team.
- Liaise with clients, consultants, and subcontractors to maintain strong working relationships and resolve commercial issues.
Experience
- Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor within civil engineering, groundworks, or construction.
- Track record of managing project accounts from start to final account across residential, commercial, or infrastructure projects.
- Experience with subcontractor procurement, valuations, and final accounts.
- Experience on data centre or industrial projects is an advantage.
Knowledge
- Strong understanding of civil engineering, groundworks, and RC frame construction methods and associated costs.
- Sound knowledge of construction contracts (e.g. JCT, NEC) and their commercial application. Understanding of measurement, valuation, and cost reporting processes.
- Awareness of UK health & safety and regulatory requirements as they relate to project delivery.
Qualifications
- Degree or HNC/HND in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Membership of, or working towards, a relevant professional body (e.g. RICS, CIOB) is desirable.
- Valid CSCS card.
- Full UK driving licence (role involves travel to site).
Skills
- Strong numerical and analytical skills, with high attention to detail and accuracy.
- Confident negotiator, with the ability to manage subcontractor accounts and resolve commercial disputes.
- Proficiency in cost management software and Microsoft Office (particularly Excel).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present commercial information clearly to clients and internal stakeholders.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- Commercially astute, with sound judgement and a proactive, problem-solving approach.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining strong links with site and project teams.
