Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join the commercial team supporting the delivery of a major marine infrastructure project in Immingham.
This is a senior site-based commercial position, suited to an experienced QS who can take ownership of commercial management across allocated packages and work closely with the Project Director, Commercial Manager, Package Managers and supply chain.
The successful candidate will be commercially strong, contractually aware and confident dealing with subcontractors, clients and senior project stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
The Senior QS will be responsible for the day-to-day commercial management of allocated packages, including:
Managing the commercial performance of projects and work packages from procurement through to final account.
Preparing, reviewing and agreeing subcontractor valuations and payment applications.
Managing subcontract accounts, including measurement, valuation, variations, retention and final accounts.
Identifying, pricing and managing variations, compensation events and other changes to the works.
Ensuring contractual notices are issued within the required timescales and maintaining appropriate commercial records.
Monitoring project expenditure against budgets and identifying areas of potential overspend.
Preparing and maintaining accurate monthly forecasts and CVRs.
Providing clear commercial commentary on project performance, risks and opportunities.
Reviewing progress on site and ensuring commercial valuations accurately reflect work completed.
Working closely with construction and engineering teams to understand progress, productivity and the commercial impact of changes.
Supporting Package Managers with commercial advice and guidance on subcontractor performance.
Reviewing subcontract terms, scope, rates and commercial obligations.
Assisting with procurement and tendering of subcontract packages where required.
Negotiating rates, variations, claims and commercial settlements with subcontractors and suppliers.
Identifying potential commercial risks and opportunities at an early stage and developing appropriate mitigation strategies.
Managing and maintaining commercial trackers, records and supporting documentation.
Supporting the preparation of client applications, valuations and commercial submissions.
Assisting with the management of any disputes, claims or contentious commercial issues.
Ensuring compliance with company commercial procedures and the requirements of the main contract.
Providing commercial input into project meetings and reporting directly to senior project management.
Supporting and mentoring junior members of the commercial team where required.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have:
Proven Senior Quantity Surveyor experience on major civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
Previous experience working for a Tier 1 contractor.
Strong NEC experience, ideally NEC4.
Experience managing significant subcontract packages.
Strong knowledge of change control, variations, compensation events and claims.
Experience with monthly reporting, forecasting and CVRs.
Good understanding of construction methodology and the commercial implications of site activities.
Experience within marine, ports or other complex civils environments is highly desirable.
Strong negotiation and communication skills.
The confidence to challenge project teams and subcontractors where necessary.
The ability to work independently and take ownership of commercial issues through to resolution.
Commercial Details
Duration: 18 months
Rate: £500–£650/day, all-inclusive, depending on experience
Location: Immingham, North East Lincolnshire
Engagement: Freelance / Contract
Accommodation: Lodge support may be available for candidates living away.
Site Presence: Predominantly site-based, with regular attendance expected.
This is an opportunity for an experienced Senior QS to take a key commercial role on a major Tier 1 marine infrastructure project, with genuine responsibility for package performance, cost control, contract administration and commercial delivery.
