We have a Container Shipping Controller role available within Tata Steel UK. The department specializes in managing container shipping solutions for downstream business units, ensuring the safe, secure, and efficient international transport of premium products. This role is ideal for someone with strong IT literacy skills and is proactive, a clear communicator and holds good attention to detail.
Role: Container Shipping Controller
Location: TATA Steel, Llanwern, Newport, Wales, NP19 4QZ
(Hybrid: 2–3 days in the office, currently Mondays and Fridays)
Rate: £17.45 per hour (equivalent to £33,120 per annum)
Contract length: 6 months (Likely to be extended or go permanent)
Shift Patterns: Monday–Friday, 36.5 hours per week. Flexible start/finish (07:30–08:30 start to 15:45–16:45 finish; finish an hour earlier on Fridays)
Start: ASAP (within 1-2 weeks)
Responsibilities:

Liaise with customer service teams regarding delivery plans and production scheduling.

Obtain, review, and agree on rates for trade lanes from shipping lines, and provide quotations to internal business units.

Inform container stuffing depots of any spikes in requirements to ensure materials are ready to deliver the plan.

Evaluate the melt and pour status for country of origin prior to booking orders.

Maximise road and rail loads out of the business units into the stuffing depots, and arrange inbound movements.

Contact shipping lines to make bookings upon material delivery to the stuffing depot.

Manage customs clearance for goods leaving the UK, alongside paperwork and supporting certification for destination country imports.

Input SOLAS VGM data into the shipping line database.

Produce bills of lading, check documentation, and cross-reference/approve invoices for the entire process.

Maintain accurate data tracking for all shipments.
Essential Requirements:

Strong IT literacy.

Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset to work within a close-knit team.

High level of attention to detail, especially when handling numerical data.

Problem-solving ability and basic inventory management skills.

Note: The team is highly open to training individuals with the right baseline skills if direct experience is limited.
Desirable Requirements:

Previous experience within distribution, logistics, or container shipping.

Prior experience dealing with HMRC customs procedures and entries.

Familiarity or experience with 'Stin8' systems.
