Speech and Language Teaching Assistant

Location: Wellingborough, Northamptonshire
Start Date: September 2026 | Full-Time | Temporary to Permanent

We are working in partnership with a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Wellingborough that is seeking a dedicated Speech and Language Teaching Assistant to join their team from September 2026.

This full-time, temporary-to-permanent opportunity involves providing targeted support to pupils with speech, language and communication needs, helping them overcome barriers to learning and develop the skills they need to thrive.



About the role:

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support for pupils with speech, language and communication needs
  • Deliver targeted activities and interventions to develop pupils' communication, listening and language skills
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils, helping to develop their confidence and self-esteem
  • Support children both inside and outside the classroom to access learning and participate fully in school life
  • Work closely with class teachers, the SENCO and wider support staff to implement individual support strategies
  • Adapt activities and resources to meet individual communication and learning needs
  • Encourage positive interaction, social communication and independence
  • Monitor pupil progress and provide feedback to teachers and relevant staff
  • Maintain accurate records in line with school policies and safeguarding procedures
  • Contribute to creating a nurturing, inclusive and communication-friendly learning environment


We're looking for:

  • Experience supporting children with speech, language or communication needs is desirable
  • Previous experience working within a primary school, nursery, SEN setting, care environment or similar is advantageous
  • A patient, caring and encouraging approach
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to build strong relationships with children and work effectively as part of a team
  • A good understanding of safeguarding and child protection
  • Relevant qualifications or experience in SEN, speech and language, education, childcare or a related field are desirable but not essential
  • A genuine passion for helping children overcome barriers to learning and reach their potential
