Are you a sports coach interested in using your skills to support young people within a school environment?
Teaching Personnel is recruiting a confident and enthusiastic Sports Coach Teaching Assistant to join a supportive secondary school in Pontypool from September 2026.
This position would suit someone with experience in sports coaching, youth work or mentoring who is considering a career in teaching, pastoral support or education.
Although your sports coaching experience will be valuable, this is primarily a classroom-based Teaching Assistant role rather than a PE coaching position.
You will spend most of your timetable supporting pupils during lessons, with a smaller part of the week dedicated to working with an individual pupil who responds particularly well to sport and physical activity as a way of engaging with learning.
What will the role involve? As a Sports Coach Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils across the school day by:
- Providing classroom support across a range of secondary subjects
- Helping pupils understand instructions and begin their work
- Breaking activities into smaller, manageable steps
- Encouraging pupils to remain focused and engaged
- Supporting positive behaviour and classroom routines
- Building pupils’ confidence, resilience and independence
- Working with teachers and the school’s pastoral or ALN team
- Providing one-to-one or small-group support when required
- Supporting the wider class and helping to create a positive learning environment
A smaller part of your timetable will involve supporting a pupil who uses sport as a positive way to engage with education.
You may use structured physical activities, sports-based rewards or mentoring sessions to help the pupil:
- Build a positive relationship with school
- Improve their confidence and motivation
- Regulate their emotions
- Develop communication and teamwork skills
- Re-engage with classroom learning
- Work towards agreed academic and behavioural targets
Any sports-based sessions will form part of the pupil’s wider support plan and will be delivered alongside their classroom education.
Who are we looking for? This opportunity would be suitable for:
- Sports coaches
- PE or sports graduates
- Personal trainers or fitness instructors
- Youth workers
- Activity leaders
- Football, rugby or athletics coaches
- Behaviour mentors
- Outdoor education instructors
- Graduates considering teacher training
- People with experience supporting children or teenagers
Previous school experience is helpful but not essential.
You should be able to demonstrate:
- Confidence working with secondary-aged pupils
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- The ability to set clear and consistent boundaries
- Patience when supporting pupils who may find school challenging
- A positive and encouraging approach
- The ability to remain calm during difficult situations
- A genuine interest in helping young people succeed
You must also understand that the majority of the position will involve supporting pupils inside the classroom rather than delivering sports sessions throughout the day.
