On behalf of our client, we are seeking to recruit a System Design Engineer on an initial 6 - month contract. As the System Design Engineer, you will provide performance prediction and analysis expertise to major defence programmes, developing the latest Complex Weapons capabilities for the UK Armed Forces in response to advanced threats in all domains

Role: System Design Engineer
Pay: £75 per hour via umbrella
Location: Stevenage
Contract: Monday- Friday, 37 Hours per week, 6 Months Contract
IR35 Status: Inside
Security Clearance: Security Clearance required to start

Responsibilities

As part of the Systems Design team, you will work on one of our client's missile programmes, providing specialist Systems Engineering expertise across the programme lifecycle.

Responsibilities will vary depending on the lifecycle stage of the programme but are expected to include:

  • Assessing system performance using complex mathematical models, including 6-Degree-of-Freedom (6-DoF) models.
  • Developing a strong understanding of how the wider system influences performance and assessing the knock-on impacts of design changes.
  • Assessing the impact of algorithm, subsystem and physical property changes on safe release and system performance envelopes against defined requirements.
  • Supporting assessments throughout the full engineering lifecycle, including concept, assessment and demonstration phases.
  • Supporting the development and refinement of system and subsystem requirements.
  • Assessing system performance against requirements in support of programme and product review gates.
  • Supporting pre- and post-firing trial planning and analysis for development and system verification activities.
  • Producing final verification evidence, including performance statements, to support customer acceptance and product certification.
  • Supporting in-service activities and product evolution assessments.
  • Generating missile and weapon performance boundary data for integration with launch platforms and wider systems, including Launch Acceptability Region (LAR), Weapon Engagement Zone (WEZ) and Range Ring data.
  • Conducting large-scale modelling studies and mass data processing to support performance assessments.
  • Producing clear and concise technical documentation and presenting complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Working collaboratively with Systems Engineers, technical specialists and subject matter experts across the programme.



Essential Experience

  • Experience using mathematical models to assess the behaviour and performance of dynamic systems.
  • Experience in data analysis using MATLAB and Simulink, or similar modelling and simulation tools.
  • Experience working within system performance and/or functional chain engineering.
  • Systems Engineering experience across multiple phases of the product lifecycle, including requirements, system architecture, verification and certification.
  • An understanding of the physical principles associated with areas such as aerodynamics, propulsion, guidance and control.
  • Ideally, exposure to RF or IR seeker technology.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex technical data and identify performance impacts.
  • The ability to write clear, concise and accurate engineering documentation.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical information clearly to both expert and non-expert audiences.
  • Good listening, organisation and time-management skills.
  • The ability to work effectively with subject matter experts and develop knowledge across new and complex technical areas.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to operate effectively within a multi-disciplinary Systems Engineering team.
