Job Description

Our client is seeking an experienced, CPC-qualified Transport Manager to lead and develop a busy multi-drop transport operation. The role involves managing fleet compliance, driver performance, route planning, transport costs and customer service. The successful candidate will also review existing processes, introduce operational improvements and develop a transport strategy that supports future growth.

Key Responsibilities of a Transport Manager

  • Manage the transport operation in line with the Operator’s Licence and all relevant legislation.
  • Lead, support and develop a team of HGV Drivers and a Transport Assistant.
  • Maintain high standards of safety, compliance and customer service.
  • Plan and review delivery routes, schedules and delivery frequencies.
  • Improve vehicle utilisation, productivity and payload efficiency.
  • Review future fleet requirements and vehicle specifications.
  • Manage vehicle servicing, inspections, MOTs and defect reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with Drivers’ Hours, Working Time and Tachograph regulations.
  • Manage transport budgets and monitor operating costs.
  • Reduce unnecessary mileage, empty running and inefficient vehicle movements.
  • Monitor transport performance using clear and measurable KPIs.
  • Review and improve the Transport Management System.
  • Work with customers to identify service improvements.
  • Support new customer requirements and future product launches.
  • Work closely with warehouse, sales, procurement and management teams.
  • Introduce practical improvements across the transport operation.

Key Skills of a Transport Manager

  • National CPC qualification.
  • Previous experience as a Transport Manager within a multi-drop HGV environment.
  • Experience managing a transport operation under an Operator’s Licence.
  • Strong knowledge of DVSA compliance requirements.
  • Good understanding of Drivers’ Hours, Working Time and Tachograph legislation.
  • Previous experience managing HGV fleets and transport teams.
  • Strong route planning and transport optimisation skills.
  • Experience using Transport Management Systems.
  • Strong leadership and people-management skills.
  • Commercial awareness and experience managing transport costs.
  • Ability to analyse operational data and make informed decisions.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Proactive and confident approach to improving existing processes.
