JOB TITLE – TRANSPORT MANAGER

SALARY – £40,000–£45,000

We are recruiting on behalf of a well‑established UK business for a Transport Manager to lead fleet across their national operations. This role ensures all commercial fleet, engineers’ vehicles, company cars and associated motor vehicles are operated safely, legally and efficiently in line with operator licence undertakings, internal policy and UK road transport regulations.

In this role you will act as the nominated Transport Manager for the operator licence and will oversee compliance for four HGVs. You will be responsible for maintaining vehicle roadworthiness, driver compliance, tachograph and drivers’ hours controls, defect management, audits and corrective actions. The role provides a clear compliance framework for all fleet users while supporting operational delivery and maintaining high standards of safety, governance and customer service.

THE ROLE

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong compliance knowledge, high attention to detail and experience managing mixed fleet environments. You will lead fleet compliance across the UK, working closely with logistics, operations, engineering, HR, finance, procurement and health and safety teams.

You’ll be responsible for ensuring operator licence compliance, maintaining robust vehicle maintenance systems, managing driver compliance, overseeing tachograph and drivers’ hours controls, leading audits and providing clear governance reporting. You will also support incident investigation, supplier performance, cost control and future fleet strategy including vehicle replacement and electrification.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading compliance management for all fleet assets including commercial vehicles, engineers’ vehicles, company cars and HGVs.

• Maintaining operator licence compliance and ensuring HGVs meet DVSA and Traffic Commissioner expectations.

• Managing vehicle maintenance planning, inspections, MOTs, servicing, defect reporting, rectification and record retention.

• Overseeing driver compliance including licence checks, CPC records, medical requirements, training and corrective actions.

• Managing tachograph, drivers’ hours and working time compliance including data download, review and investigation.

• Developing fleet compliance policies, processes, risk assessments, SOPs and audit schedules.

• Providing compliance reporting, KPIs and governance updates covering availability, defects, infringements and audit findings.

• Chairing fleet compliance reviews and ensuring clear ownership and escalation routes.

• Working with operational teams to align fleet utilisation and allocation with business needs while maintaining legal compliance.

• Liaising with leasing providers, maintenance suppliers, insurers and fuel partners to maintain compliance and cost control.

• Supporting incident investigation, insurance claims and road risk reviews.

• Leading fleet-related health and safety activities and ensuring vehicle users understand their responsibilities.

• Partnering with finance and procurement on fleet budgets, cost forecasting, efficiency opportunities and future fleet strategy.

• Maintaining accurate fleet records and audit trails for internal review or external scrutiny.

• Keeping up to date with changes in road transport legislation and translating requirements into practical business controls.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We’re looking for:

• Transport Manager CPC holder or someone able to obtain and maintain the qualification.

• Strong understanding of operator licence obligations, DVSA expectations, vehicle roadworthiness and drivers’ hours rules.

• Experience managing compliance across mixed fleets including HGVs, vans, engineers’ vehicles and company cars.

• Excellent attention to detail with the ability to identify compliance gaps and drive corrective actions.

• Strong stakeholder management skills with confidence to challenge non-compliance.

• Commercial awareness and experience supporting fleet budgets, cost control and supplier performance.

• Clear communication skills with the ability to translate legal requirements into practical guidance.

• Highly organised and process-driven with experience managing audits, governance meetings and multiple priorities.

• Competent user of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Power BI, with the ability to analyse compliance data.

• Knowledge of UK road transport regulations, occupational road risk and best practice fleet management controls.
