Due to a strong pipeline of secured retail projects, our client, an established fit-out and refurbishment contractor, is looking for an experienced Freelance Project Manager to join the business and support a growing workload through the remainder of 2026.
The first project will be a £500k store fit out for a global sports brand in Birmingham, commencing on 28th September with a 7-week programme.
Following this, there is a strong pipeline of further retail projects, with the majority of the workload expected to remain across Birmingham and the wider Midlands. There will also be projects in Scotland and Reading over the next 4–5 months, so candidates must be comfortable travelling and staying away when required.
The workload will initially involve taking ownership of individual schemes before progressing into the management of multiple live retail projects at the same time.
The RoleWorking closely with the Contracts Director and senior management team, you will be responsible for the successful delivery of fast-paced retail fit-out and refurbishment projects, generally ranging between £400k–£600k.
Responsibilities will include:

Managing fast-track retail fit-out and refurbishment projects from start through to completion.

Initially overseeing a £500k global sports brand fit out in Birmingham.

Progressing into managing multiple live projects simultaneously.

Producing, updating and managing project programmes using Microsoft Project.

Coordinating Site Managers, subcontractors, suppliers and specialist trades.

Managing projects against programme, budget and quality targets.

Liaising directly with clients and maintaining strong working relationships.

Monitoring project costs and maintaining good commercial awareness.

Providing regular progress and programme updates to senior management.

Managing resources across multiple projects and locations.

Ensuring health & safety standards are maintained throughout delivery.
Applicants must have:

Minimum 3 years' experience working as a Project Manager, ideally within fit out and refurbishment.

Strong retail / shop fit-out experience – essential.

Experience delivering fast-track retail projects of a similar value.

Proven experience running multiple projects at the same time.

Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Project – essential.

Ability to confidently produce, update and manage construction programmes.

Strong client-facing and stakeholder management skills.

Good commercial understanding of project costs and performance.

Willingness to travel nationwide and stay away from home when required.

Ideally based within a sensible travelling distance of Birmingham / the Midlands, due to the volume of upcoming work in the region.

Ability to work independently and take full ownership of project delivery.
