Wireman – National Grid hV Substations

Winshall are seeking wiremen to carry out electrical wiring, installation, termination, testing and commissioning activities within NG substations, ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with project specifications, drawings, company procedures and UK electrical standards.

The successful candidate will have experience working within hV substations and a strong understanding of substation electrical systems, control wiring and associated equipment.

Experience working on National Grid projects is essential. NG Person MUST be held.

Key Responsibilities

Install, terminate and dress control, protection and auxiliary wiring within 132kV, 275kV and/or 400kV substations.

Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules and termination drawings.

Install and terminate multicore and control cables.

Carry out glanding, crimping, ferruling and identification of cables.

Complete point-to-point wiring and continuity checks.

Install and connect control panels, marshalling kiosks, protection panels and associated equipment.

Carry out wiring associated with transformers, switchgear, CTs, VTs, circuit breakers and isolators.

Assist with installation and connection of battery systems, DC systems and auxiliary supplies.

Undertake cable containment, trunking, conduit and associated electrical installation work.

Carry out electrical testing and assist commissioning teams as required.

Identify and rectify wiring faults and installation issues.

Complete inspection and test documentation accurately.

Work closely with supervisors, commissioning engineers and other site personnel.

Maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment.

Follow site RAMS, permits, isolation procedures and company health & safety requirements.

Ensure all work is completed to the required quality standards and project programme.

Report any defects, delays, safety concerns or technical issues to the relevant supervisor.

Candidates should have knowledge of:

HV switchgear, Transformers, Protection and control systems

CTs and VTs, Circuit breakers, Disconnectors/isolators

Earthing systems, Battery and DC systems, AC auxiliary systems

Marshalling kiosks, Protection and control panels

Substation control and wiring systems

Cable installation and termination

Skills & Competencies

Ability to read and understand electrical drawings and schematics.

Strong cable termination and wiring skills.

Good attention to detail.

Ability to work independently and as part of a site team.

Good understanding of electrical safety and safe systems of work.

Ability to identify wiring faults and resolve installation issues.

Reliable, organised and professional approach.

Ability to work to tight project deadlines.

Willingness to travel and work away from home when required.

Quals & Certs

Essential/desirable qualifications may include:

Electrical qualification or recognised electrical apprenticeship.

ECS/JIB Electrical Installation or equivalent certification.

CSCS/ECS card appropriate to the role.

HV substation experience.

Relevant electrical safety training.

IPAF/PASMA where required for the project.

Manual Handling.

Working at Height.

First Aid – desirable.

National Grid Person - Essential.
