Assistant Room Leader

Job Purpose

To support the Room Leader in the day-to-day running of the nursery room, ensuring children receive high-quality care, learning, and development opportunities in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The Assistant Room Leader will help maintain a safe, stimulating, and inclusive environment whilst acting as a positive role model for staff and children.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Room Support

  1. Support the Room Leader in the day-to-day management of the room.
  2. Lead the room in the absence of the Room Leader.
  3. Assist with staff deployment and ensuring room routines run effectively.
  4. Support the monitoring and maintenance of room standards, including hygiene and resources.

Childcare and Learning

  1. Deliver high-quality care and education in line with the EYFS and Birth to Five Matters.
  2. Support planning and provide engaging learning opportunities for children.
  3. Complete observations, assessments, and learning records to a high standard.
  4. Support children's individual learning, development, and wellbeing.
  5. Promote positive behaviour and inclusive practice.

Safeguarding and Welfare

  1. Safeguard and promote the welfare of all children.
  2. Follow safeguarding procedures and report concerns appropriately.
  3. Ensure children's safety through effective supervision and ratio management.
  4. Support health and safety procedures, risk assessments, and welfare requirements.
  5. Complete accident, incident, medication, and care records accurately.

Parent Partnerships

  1. Build positive relationships with parents and carers.
  2. Share information regarding children's learning, development, and wellbeing.
  3. Support children and families during transitions and settling-in periods.

Professional Responsibilities

  1. Ensure compliance with nursery policies, procedures, and statutory requirements.
  2. Maintain accurate records and documentation.
  3. Attend training, meetings, and supervision sessions.
  4. Maintain confidentiality and professional standards at all times.
  5. Undertake any other reasonable duties requested by management.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Level 3 Early Years Childcare qualification.
  • Good understanding of the EYFS and safeguarding requirements.
  • 1 year experience working with children aged 0–5 years.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work using own initiative.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting children's welfare.
