Design Engineer in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

We are looking for an experienced Design Engineer to join a specialist engineering team, working on the development of air and fuel system components for powertrain and engine applications.

You will be responsible for designing, developing and delivering engineering projects from concept through to production, working closely with internal teams, suppliers and customers to deliver solutions to agreed time, cost and quality targets.

This is a hands-on engineering role requiring strong mechanical design experience, excellent CAD capability and a good understanding of engine components, powertrain systems and manufacturing processes.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, plan and deliver air and fuel system/component development projects to agreed time, cost and quality targets.
• Communicate project progress, design status, technical issues and risks to stakeholders, peers and management.
• Lead design reviews to gain cross-functional support for new designs, supplier selection and capital investment.
• Work closely with suppliers to develop technical specifications and deliver quality solutions through APQP.
• Assess technical risks using FMEA and coordinate simulation and validation activities, including DVP&R.
• Investigate and resolve technical issues using structured problem-solving methods, including 8D.
• Work with Product Management to understand customer requirements and translate them into effective engineering solutions.
• Produce and review technical documentation and engineering reports to support production design release.
• Collaborate with global engineering teams to implement solutions across multiple manufacturing locations.
• Apply Lean principles and lessons learned to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
• Support peer reviews and share technical knowledge to develop robust engineering solutions.

About You

We are looking for an experienced mechanical design engineer with a strong background in powertrain, engine components or related systems.

You will ideally have:

• A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent engineering knowledge and experience.
• 6–8 years of relevant engineering or design experience.
• Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals and experience developing engine, powertrain or related components.
• Advanced experience using CAD and PLM systems.
• Strong experience using Creo for the design of powertrain or engine components.
• Experience using Teamcenter or a similar PLM system.
• Experience working through design reviews and collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• A good understanding of manufacturing principles and engineering processes.
• Experience with FMEA, APQP, DVP&R and structured problem-solving such as 8D.
• The ability to independently research technical problems and develop effective solutions.
• Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage complex engineering projects and meet commitments.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
