Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Principal Electrical Design Engineer to provide technical leadership across the design, integration, commissioning and delivery of complex marine engineering projects.

 

The successful candidate will act as the discipline authority for electrical engineering activities, supporting projects from concept and detailed design through to commissioning, sea trials and final handover.

 

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer looking to take ownership of electrical systems design within a technically challenging and highly regulated environment.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the lead electrical engineering authority across multiple projects.
  • Approve electrical design philosophies, calculations and technical solutions.
  • Lead technical reviews with clients, classification societies and regulatory bodies.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers across the business.
  • Support concept development, contract design, detailed design and production engineering activities.
  • Manage technical risks, design compliance and engineering change processes.
  • Support commissioning activities, acceptance testing and vessel delivery.

 

Electrical Systems Experience

Candidates should have experience in the design and integration of:

  • HV and LV AC power systems
  • DC electrical distribution systems
  • Power generation and distribution architectures
  • Emergency switchboards and emergency power systems
  • UPS and battery energy storage systems
  • Power Management Systems (PMS)
  • Shore power connections
  • Propulsion electrical interfaces
  • Hybrid and low-emission power systems
  • Lighting and auxiliary electrical systems
  • Fire detection systems
  • CCTV, communication and public address systems
  • Control and monitoring systems

 

Technical Calculations

Applicants should be capable of producing and reviewing:

  • Electrical load analysis and power balance studies
  • Generator sizing calculations
  • Short-circuit studies
  • Protection coordination and discrimination studies
  • Cable sizing and voltage drop calculations
  • Earthing and grounding calculations
  • Harmonic analysis
  • Battery autonomy assessments
  • Motor starting studies
  • Arc flash and electrical safety assessments


Automation & Control Systems

Experience in automation and platform management systems is desirable, including:

  • Functional design specifications
  • PLC architectures
  • Industrial communication networks
  • I/O schedules and signal lists
  • HMI and mimic system development
  • Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
  • Harbour Acceptance Testing (HAT)
  • Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
  • Commissioning and sea trial support

 

Compliance & Standards

Candidates should possess knowledge of relevant marine and electrical engineering regulations and standards, including:

  • Lloyd's Register (LR)
  • DNV
  • UK MCA requirements
  • SOLAS
  • IACS requirements
  • IEC 60092
  • IEC 61892
  • IEC 60533
  • IEC 60945
  • IEC 61508 / IEC 61511

 

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status preferred.
  • Significant experience within shipbuilding, marine engineering or related sectors.
  • Strong understanding of marine electrical systems and vessel integration.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering reviews.
  • Proven ability to manage complex design packages through the full project lifecycle.
