Bookkeepers maintain day-to-day financial records — sales and purchase ledgers, bank reconciliation, VAT returns and payroll for smaller businesses. AAT Level 2 or 3 is the typical UK qualification, though many bookkeepers are self-taught. Sage, Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent experience all carry weight.
