We are looking for a skilled Mechanical Technician to join a leading design and manufacturing business operating within the surveillance and defence sectors. This is an excellent opportunity to work on innovative, high-quality engineering products in a hands-on workshop environment.
You will support the prototype and production assembly of complex machines, working from engineering drawings and controlled procedures to ensure all products meet the required technical and quality standards.
The Role
As a Mechanical Technician, you will assemble, modify and support the build of mechanical equipment. You will work closely with Engineering, Production Control and Mechanical Fitters to resolve build issues, manage incomplete kits and maintain accurate manufacturing documentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Assemble prototype and production machines in line with engineering drawings, procedures and quality requirements.
- Record build modifications accurately and complete change request documentation where required.
- Liaise with Production Control regarding incomplete kits and missing components.
- Modify existing components using hand tools and basic machine tools, including drills, lathes and mills.
- Manufacture simple brackets, mounting plates, tooling and other mechanical parts.
- Check completed work against engineering drawings, technical specifications and quality standards.
- Communicate effectively with Engineering to resolve technical and assembly issues during the build process.
- Provide technical support to Mechanical Fitters when required.
- Ensure workshop equipment is maintained, safe to use and evaluated where necessary.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation in accordance with controlled processes and the Quality Manual.
- Follow all health and safety requirements, procedures and company policies.
- Maintain a clean, organised workshop environment in line with good housekeeping and 6S standards.
Essential
- Level 3 qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing or a related discipline.
- At least three years’ experience in a similar Mechanical Technician, Mechanical Fitter or workshop-based engineering role.
- Experience working within a manufacturing, engineering or workshop environment; defence or MoD workshop experience would be advantageous.
- Confident using hand tools and manual machine tools.
- Ability to read, interpret and work from complex engineering drawings.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with engineering and production teams.
- Experience operating manual lathes and milling machines.
- Previous experience supporting prototype builds or low-volume production.
- Experience working to controlled quality procedures in a regulated manufacturing environment.
You will be a practical, methodical and quality-focused Mechanical Technician who enjoys hands-on assembly and problem-solving. You will be comfortable working independently when needed, while also collaborating closely with engineering and production colleagues to deliver high-quality equipment on time.
