Thermal Plant Operator – Energy from Waste

Location: Milton Keynes Rate: £400–£500 per day – Inside IR35 Contract: Temporary to Permanent Permanent Salary: £50,000–£55,000 Shift Pattern: 4 on / 4 off – 12-hour shifts, 2 days followed by 2 nights

We are recruiting an experienced Thermal Plant Operator to join a complex Energy from Waste facility in Milton Keynes.

This is an excellent temp-to-perm opportunity for an experienced plant operator with a strong background in Energy from Waste, combustion, boiler operations or complex power generation.

Previous gasification experience is not essential. We are particularly interested in operators who have successfully worked within an Energy from Waste facility or complex power plant and are confident operating plant during steady-state conditions, start-up, shutdown and emergency situations.

## Key Responsibilities

  • Safely and efficiently operate the thermal treatment plant.
  • Monitor plant performance and respond effectively to operational issues.
  • Ensure compliance with Environmental Permit requirements and report incidents or non-compliance.
  • Work in accordance with Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental procedures.
  • Liaise closely with maintenance teams to maximise plant availability and performance.
  • Diagnose technical and process issues in a fast-moving operational environment.
  • Complete accurate shift handovers, maintenance requests and operational documentation.
  • Support and mentor new plant personnel.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement across plant systems, processes and performance.
  • Work towards defined operational KPIs.

## Essential Experience

Candidates should have:

NVQ Level 3, National Diploma or equivalent relevant technical qualification. Demonstrable experience operating an Energy from Waste facility or comparable complex power plant. Strong combustion and boiler process knowledge. Relevant technical competency within thermal/process plant operations. Strong fault-finding and problem-solving ability. The ability to remain calm, analytical and decisive during plant abnormalities or emergency situations. Experience working within strict Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.

WAMITAB Level 4 Operator Competence for Managing Thermal Treatment Facilities would be advantageous but is not essential.

## Shift Pattern

The role operates on a 4 on / 4 off pattern consisting of 2 day shifts followed by 2 night shifts, with 12-hour shifts.
The overall shift arrangement incorporates annual leave and provides extended periods away from work, including periods of approximately 10, 12 and 18 days off.
The successful candidate will initially work day shifts for training before moving onto the full shift rotation.

## Package

Temporary: £400–£500 per day, Inside IR35, depending on experience.
This is a genuine temp-to-permanent opportunity, with a permanent equivalent salary of approximately £50,000–£55,000.
